Woman found guilty in Helena double-murder trial

HELENA - Michelle Gable has been found guilty on two counts of deliberate homicide in the deaths of Joe Gable and Sunday Bennett.

Gable was accused of shooting and killing them in October 2011, and as the verdict was read on Wednesday night, Gable's face revealed little trace of emotion.

Gable had told jurors she only wanted to talk to her husband, despite bringing guns into the apartment and hiding them early that October morning.

A total of 17 shots were fired that day; at least two of those shots went directly into Joe Gable's arm and chest, and an estimated six others struck Bennett. The prosecution demonstrated that Gable had to reload to fire more shots.

"Michelle Gable, within three inches, fires, that bullet goes through his chest, taking out the top portion of his top lungs, barely missing his heart," Lewis & Clark County Attorney Leo Gallagher said during closing arguments.

But Gable claims that she entered the house lawfully, and that she took the guns for protection when Joe attacked her.

Gable faces the possibility of two life sentences. Her sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
