BUTTE -

Consider it a gift from the heart - the heart of Montana forests. Montana lumber is expected to help people almost 3,000 miles away in Haiti.

“The people have absolutely nothing. No government to help them, absolutely nothing, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western world right now,” said Megan Bradshaw of Maternal Life International.

Volunteers with Wood For Haiti from Missoula arrived in Butte Friday morning with lumber to help Maternal Life International eventually build an family health office in Haiti. Wood is a scarce resource on the poor island nation.

“Right now, there’s no wood so they build with cement. When there’s an earthquake it turns into a tomb for the people. It just crumbles and kills,” Bradshaw said.

The Wood for Haiti crews came in from Missoula with a 5-ton load of lumber which is going to be stored here in the Kelley Mine warehouse and then they’re going to send it to Haiti later for building projects, because the poor island has a severe shortage of lumber.

“If you look at a satellite view of Haiti there’s no wood there, absolutely no wood, they had to sell it to the French government,” she said. “This is going to be an initial office for Maternal life international helps with family health with a focus on women’s health.”

It could be several months before this wood gets to Haiti but organizers say ever little bit helps.
