Montana sheriff advocates for responsible conceal-carry

HELENA -

This week's mass shooting in California has prompted law enforcement across the country, including right here in Montana, to encourage citizens to carry concealed weapons.

The Ulster County Sheriff's Office in New York went to social media on Thursday urging licensed gun owners to carry their concealed firearms.

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton is also advocating for folks to obtain their concealed weapons permit. In Montana you must be at least 18 years old to receive a concealed weapons permit.

Such permits don't apply to current members of law enforcement. Sheriff Dutton advises gun owners to carry responsibly.

"We go through training. We train for this," Dutton said. "The day that we pray that never comes but we still have to be ready for it. It's a different story to do it, to take another human life. "
