DEER LODGE -

The man accused of brutally beating a Deer Lodge man and strangling his mother so he could steal their silver says he's not guilty of their murders.

53-year-old David Wayne Nelson was formally charged last week with the October murders of 79-year-old Beverly Giannonatti and her son Greg.

Prosecutors accuse Nelson of beating Greg Giannonatti to death with a hammer and then strangling his mother with electrical wire.

Nelson entered not guilty pleas to two counts of deliberate homicide today in Powell County District Court.

The state says Nelson had been working for the pair on their property when he attacked them, stealing 17 silver bars which he then sold in Missoula.

Nelson remains in jail without bond.

Nelson already appeared in court in Ravalli County just before Christmas, where prosecutors are trying to revoke his suspended sentence for a 1999 kidnapping and robbery in the Bitterroot.

Nelson is set to appear before Judge Ray Dayton in Powell County District Court in the morning and may enter a plea to the murder charges.
