MISSOULA -

Missoula City Council President Marilyn Marler is Missoula's acting mayor while Mayor John Engen recovers from an undisclosed illness

Marler is currently serving her third term as one of Missoula's ward six council members and as council president, she says she's is no stranger to filling in for Engen -- although she says her time as acting mayor is usually brief; a day or two while Engen is out on business.

Marler says she expects to serve as acting mayor for up to several weeks, but she's not expecting a bumpy road and says things will be business as usual until Engen returns.

"A lot of what the mayor's job is kind of long-term strategy and problem-solving on a different time scale than one or two or three weeks," Marler said. "So the strategy is just to keep things functioning smoothly in his absence and he'll be back soon."

Out of respect for Mayor Engen's privacy, Marler did not disclose the nature of his illness. She did say, however, that it is "nothing too serious" and expects Engen to make a swift recovery.
