BOZEMAN -

Kitten season is about to begin at Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Bozeman.

As more babies are born, more will end up at the shelter than at other times of the year.

"Last year in May we took in over 400 kittens just in one month," said the shelter's volunteer and education manager Emily Burkhardt.

The shelter recently held its second annual April Showers Bring May Meowers Kitten Shower to prepare for the expected influx.

"It's just like a baby shower except for kittens and kitten supplies. Kittens take a lot of work and they take a lot of material and supplies," Burkhardt said.

The shelter does have many older cats which might be more appealing to someone looking for a more experienced pet.

"They're more likely to be litter box trained, they're just as feisty, just as much fun as kittens, but a little less work. Kittens are a lot of work," Burkhardt said.

Donations for all animals are accepted year round.

"We have a wish list on our website, Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter, and we do keep it all up to date, so you know what we need at any given time of the year," Burkhardt said.

There is actually a kitten-specific wish list on Amazon where items can be donated and shipped directly to the shelter.
