Western Montana ski areas set records

A pair of local ski areas saw record numbers of skiers this season.

Whitefish Mountain Resort announced Monday that it set a new record with more than 346,000 total skier visits, beating its previous record by more than 1,500. The ski area also set a new record for skier visits in a single day with 8,601 on December 30, 2016.

The resort also received 407 inches of snowfall, its second best snowfall total in 20 years.

“We are thankful for the devotion of our season pass holders as well as our returning out-of-town guests. It is exciting to see continued steady growth in both our local and destination markets,” Whitefish Mountain Resort CEO Dan Graves said.

Meanwhile, it was also a banner year at Lookout Pass Ski & Recreation Area where they set a new skier visit record of 66,815. The ski area also received 423” of snow over the winter.

Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area President and CEO Phil Edholm says they're now gearing up for the Route of the Hiawatha bike trail, with a projected opening of May 27.
