MISSOULA -

The man arrested for fatally shooting a Broadwater County deputy is a frequent user of social media, sharing posts of guns, hangings, bible verses and patriotic images online.

Lloyd Montier Barrus, 61, is being held on a felony deliberate homicide charge in the Missoula County jail. He's scheduled to appear in Missoula Justice Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Barrus was born in southeast Idaho, but has also lived in Alaska and was currently living in Bakersfield, California.

Barrus’ posts vary widely, touching on past confrontations with the government, from Ruby Ridge to Waco, observations on Nazis and racism, and pictures of guns, skulls and hangings.

Many of his posts focus on gun rights, and historical concepts of revolution, from Montana’s vigilantes to concerns over immigrants in the US. Some appear to sound a note of defiance, or at least concern over politics and current affairs.

And Barrus frequently sounds a religious note in his posts, including pictures of highlighted passages from his bible, one passage in particular from Isaiah in the Old Testament highlights references to the historical responsibility of a sheriff, a frequent theme of individuals who chafe at government authority, believing a sheriff outranks everyone.

It’s difficult to assess what the sum of Barrus’ posts mean, but it’s likely we’ll learn much more as the courts analyze what led to Tuesday’s deadly events.

His son, Marshall Barrus, has a his criminal record, but nothing indicating the level of violence that was seen Tuesday morning.

Marshall Barrus has been living in Belgrade, and according to court records obtained by the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, has been convicted for burglary and criminal mischief, as well as drunk driving. He was facing trial this summer for forcing his way into a Belgrade apartment last fall and threatening to kill a man.
