The Montana Highway Patrol says the driver of a pickup truck that crashed head-on with a Lolo family Sunday morning on Highway 12 fell asleep before the fatal accident.

Trooper Tyler Swartz tells KPAX  the pickup driver, who is not being identified at this time, was driving eastbound on Highway 12 when he fell asleep, drifted to the right side of the road, then over-corrected, crossing the center line and crashing head-on with a westbound vehicle.

Swartz says the westbound vehicle then rolled and rested along the shoulder.

8-year-old Carli Miller of Lolo, a passenger in the westbound vehicle, died in the accident. The five other occupants in the vehicle were taken to a Missoula hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
