Sometimes a veteran needs their own hero.
One organization at the Western Montana Fair is recruiting volunteer drivers to take vets to their appointments.
In western Montana, 4,989 veterans have been transported across western Montana to their appointments in the past six months, said Mary Jo Berry, area coordinator for Disabled American Veterans.
They typically go to Veteran’s Association clinics in Helena or Kalispell.
Missoula only has one driver right now and some veterans asking for rides have had to be turned down in recent weeks.
Disabled American Veterans is a nonprofit organization who puts on this program.
“These are our veterans. We need to start paying back, so it does, it means a lot to them to be able to make a phone call and have somebody come and take and sit with them during their appointments, pick them up, take them home,” said Berry.
