MISSOULA - For those who have property in the path of one of the wildfires burning across western Montana, there are steps fire management professionals suggestion to take to protect homes and structures.
Axmen Firefighting Equipment is the largest store in Northwest Montana, where they have been working overtime to keep landowners and companies well prepared to fight a wildfire.
Kory Koski works in the firefighting department at Axmen. He says when people walk into their business in hopes of securing their home from fires, he figures out first what capabilities their property has, and what they want to accomplish.
One particular product has the potential to repel flames for up to 12 hours.
FireIce is one key ingredient to fireproof anything from garden plants to roofing. It turns from powder to gel when it goes into contact with water, and there are a few different ways it can be applied.
“This is a personal water container, you just pressurize it with the air compressor, until it is in the green. What Fire Ice has done, is they have got a different nozzle you can add into it, and you fill it with water and dump this nice little bottle in here,” said Brian McFadden, firefighting equipment department.
An HDU wand is another piece of equipment that works well.
“This is called the HDU wand, which works fabulous. Each bucket of FireIce will cover 1250 square feet once the nozzle is adjusted correctly. Or, if you do own a pressure pump, this is their large inch and a half deductor,” he said.
The Axmen staff also highly recommend a book to help you understand how to protect your home, before purchasing equipment.
It is called Fire Smart Home Handbook, and it will give you step by step information on how to create fire preventative zones around your property.
