Wildfire scam artists making the rounds in Northwest Montana

Posted: Updated:

KALISPELL - The fires hitting Montana are bad enough but thieves are making it worse by trying to scam their neighbors.

"Unfortunately, these people do tend to come out anytime there is a major event like this and prey on people fears and concerns," Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry.

Sheriff Curry adds that they have received multiple calls from people saying firefighters are telling them to evacuate. But these are phony "smoke eaters", complete with gear, who just want to steal from homeowners when they leave. Only uniformed deputies will ask you to leave.

Deputies are also dealing with false fire reports. Curry says pull over and make sure its really a fire before you call.
