Mandatory evacuations being lifted near Caribou fire

EUREKA - Authorities have announced that the evacuation order for the entire West Kootenai area is being lifted.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and will begin allowing residents back to their homes beginning on Sunday at 10 a.m.

A pre-evacuation warning will remain in effect for the entire West Kootenai area.

A pre-evacuation warning is still in place for the West Kootenai area south of Tooley Lake, and the Basin Creek area.

The Caribou fire has destroyed 10 homes and 30 structures.

The blaze, that has burned nearly 19,200 acres 18 miles northwest of Eureka, is 35% contained.

A fire information line at (406) 272-2082 is available from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily. 

There are 373 people assigned to battle the lightning sparked blaze.
