MISSOULA - Montana fans of the History Channel’s “Ice Road Truckers” will be shedding some tears Thursday night as an emotional episode of the program shows the late Darrell Ward’s son coming north to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Darrell Ward, called the “Montana Legend” on the program, died tragically when the small plane he was riding in crashed east of Missoula just over a year ago. Ward had flown out of Missoula with a friend who was piloting the aircraft. They had planned to land at the airstrip at Rock Creek to reunite with friends and family when the plane spun out of control and crashed alongside I-90.
Federal investigators have never been able to pin down an exact cause for the fatal crash.
Ward, among the most popular drivers on the show to tackle the “ice roads” in Canada, had completed filming the 10th season of the program, which was dedicated in his memory. The Corvallis High School graduate and Deer Lodge resident was well-known here in the Northern Rockies, where he spent many of his summers hauling equipment to help firefighting efforts.
During the “ice Road Truckers” episode scheduled to air tonight, Ward’s son Reno will be reuniting with his father’s business partner and friend, Lisa Kelly, as he returns to the ice roads to help fill the vacancy left by his father’s death.
