Another Republican has announced that he’s running to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester next year – and his wife is challenging Tester as a Democrat.

James Dean, a financial adviser from Havre, and his wife, Sarah Dean, filed their respective paperwork as candidates this week with the Federal Election Commission.

James Dean told MTN News Friday that both he and his wife believe reforming the Federal Reserve Bank and the banking system is the path to solving many of the nation’s problems, but that they have their own, separate beliefs on other issues.

However, he said they thought if they each ran as candidates from different parties, they could break down any respective barriers with voters, depending on that voters’ political affiliation.

Dean, 38, said he’s never run for political office before. He’s the fifth Republican to announce that he’s running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Tester, who’s running for re-election in 2018.

He also said he identifies with the liberal wing of the Democratic Party’s criticism of the banking system and Wall Street, but “they don’t know how to actually fix that system.”

Other Republicans already in the race are state Auditor Matt Rosendale, state Sen. Al Olszewski of Kalispell, and business owners Troy Downing of Big Sky and Ron Murray of Belgrade.
