Top 5 most dangerous Montana intersections found in Missoula

MISSOULA - Changing lanes, turning into a flow of busy traffic and the constant stream of pedestrians crossing the road are just a few factors why intersections are a hub for collisions.

A study released by 1point21 Interactive through a partnership with Ragain & Cook, P.C. law firm in Billings, includes a list of the most dangerous intersections in Montana and the top five are all in Missoula.

Those include North Reserve Street and Mullan Road, South Reserve Street and Brooks Street, North Reserve Street and West Broadway Street, South Reserve Street and South Third Street West and East Broadway and Van Buren Street.

The numbers show that more than 30% of all crashes in Montana occur at an urban intersection. IIHS spokesman Russ Rader told MTN News that there are many factors that come into play with busy intersections, but most have a common theme.

"Busy intersections in urban areas are [a] major sight for crashes. We did a study looking at the factors involved in urban crashes and red light running was one of the main factors leading to urban crashes," Rader said. "That’s one thing that can be addressed with automated enforcement."

Rader added that one way to mitigate the collisions is to enforce the law 24/7 in these areas, along with lowering the speed limit. He also says there has been an increase in urban collisions across the country as our economy has grown stronger since the recession more people are out driving.

"We had a slight dip in crashes and crash deaths during the recession. Now, the numbers of crashes in many areas are going up as the unemployment rate has fallen," Rader said.
