Missoula elementary school volunteer wins statewide award

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - A volunteer at Paxson Elementary School in Missoula is receiving a prestigious award thanks to her tireless effort.

Jonna Rhein has been chosen as the 2017 recipient of the AARP Montana’s Intergenerational Service Award. Rhein spends nearly 40 hours a week greeting students and teaching a number of small second and third grade reading groups.

Rhein, who started volunteering seven years ago, says she become bored after retiring from her career as a nurse and knew she wanted to help kids by enhancing their reading skills.

In addition to her work during the school year, Rhein also runs four weeks of reading camp for struggling readers during the summer.

For someone who dedicates so much of her time, support, and care to the students, it’s no surprise that she hopes to use this award to further her effort.

“I feel so excited about the award, I feel so excited about the recognition partly because I would love to get a summer reading program started, first in Missoula and then spread out," Rhein said.

Rhein will receive her award at a Volunteer Award Banquet held in Helena on Wednesday evening.
