Montana Hope Project grants child's wish

HELENA - A young girl’s wish to travel to Hawaii will be granted, thanks to the Montana Hope Project.

Montana Highway Patrol troopers presented five-year-old Gemma Greer and her family with a check to pay for a seven-day trip on Monday.

When she was four, Gemma was diagnosed with a rare childhood kidney cancer. She had to spend six months in Salt Lake City during the winter, getting treatment.

Ruby Greer, Gemma’s mother, said the Montana Hope Project contacted her family to provide support and to talk about possibly granting Gemma a wish.

“She was very cold and had to stay inside a lot and talked about how she would love to go to the beach and go swimming,” Ruby Greer said. “So her wish was to go to Hawaii.”

She said the Hope Project provided her family with positivity at a difficult time.

“We’re very thankful for the Montana Hope Project,” she said. “They were in the back of our minds throughout Gemma’s entire treatment process, basically as a beacon of light, that we were going to get to do something that Gemma was really looking forward to every day of treatment.”

Ruby Greer says Gemma’s cancer is in remission, though they still go to Salt Lake City every three months for checkups.

The Montana Hope Project was started by Highway Patrol troopers in 1984, to help critically ill children in the state. Today, it is a nonprofit organization sponsored by the Association of Montana Troopers. Gemma’s is the 247th wish they’ve granted, and the 19th this year.

Trooper Thomas Kruse has been taking part in Montana Hope Project presentations for about five years.

“It brings me out into an environment where we’re doing something real positive for kids in the community, granting them wishes and making their wishes come true,” he said.
