Missoula police detective balances work, academic pursuits

MISSOULA - Missoula Police Detective Mitchell Lang is no slouch when it comes to keeping his mind sharp.

“My goal, and it kind of depends on the things going on in my life, but I try to do a book a week," Lang said. "A lot of the things that I read I don’t necessarily agree with. But I like to hear why people think the way that they do.”

Lang served in the Marine Corps before his time with the police department. He went to six different community colleges while he was enlisted and moving around the country and the world.

“Higher education, even though it is hard, I wouldn’t want to go back to not knowing the things that I know now," Lang said. "So that has been a big push, to continue to learn.

His job as a detective is challenging, but also rewarding.

“Everyone loves a mystery. To challenge yourself, and to think through and to be creative, and to coordinate with people who are very, very, very intelligent people and to get ideas and to learn from those people, on how to do things better, or to come to a correct outcome, is for me, a personally rewarding aspect of it,” Lang said.
