Missoula County reports smooth Election Day

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - The results from Tuesday's Missoula municipal elections are now in the books and Missoula Elections Officer Rebecca Connors says the day went off without a hitch.

The ballots were mailed out to eligible Missoula city residents in early October.

Connors says the numbers were comparable to the last mayoral election in 2013 and were significantly higher than the 25% turnout for the 2015 election which mainly featured city council seats.

She says the real action came on Tuesday.

“At the beginning of this election we saw slow returns and we thought we might see lower turnout than anticipated, but yesterday Missoula voters showed up.  We saw 42% of voters cast their ballot for this election, 50% of ballots issued came back to us as a return, so those numbers are very comparable to a primary," Connors said.

Looking ahead to the 2018 election year, Connors says the main concern will be finding a location to replace the Hellgate Elementary School polling place, while the school is under construction.

CORRECTION: In an earlier report we listed Hellgate High School as needing a new location for a polling place in 2018.
