SUPERIOR - A committee in Mineral has gotten down to work to try and figure out how to reopen the jail.

Mineral County Commissioner Roman Zylawy told MTN News that they’ve identified two key issues, and the sheriff and commissioners are working to come up with solutions after they had to relocate their inmates in late October due to staffing shortages.

A jail committee was established at last week's county commissioners meeting with Zylawy saying it includes the sheriff, undersheriff, three members of the public, and two detention officers who recently quit.

The committee is now are working to figure out why people don’t want to work at the jail.

Zylawy says that low salary for detention officers, and reportedly questionable policies that have been implemented by jail management are the two issues being examined.

“The problems we’ve identified, ya know, between the Sheriff and the commissioners, we can have a quick resolution because we want to get some jailers back to work. Hopefully, with the limited pool of workers in Mineral County, there are still some people who will apply for the job,” Zylawy said.

In the meantime, Mineral County arrests are being sent to the Sanders County jail in Thompson Falls, which is 75 miles away. The nearest option is Missoula, but Zylawy said the facility is too full to house Mineral County inmates.

Moving the inmates to Sanders County is costing 69.50 per day, per inmate, according to Zylawy.

On Monday evening, November 13, the committee will present their findings  and recommendations to the commissioners, in an effort to get the jail reopened.

All of the public is invited to the 5:30 meeting happening in the county commissioners meeting room in Superior.
