Block Management program helping Montana hunters

Posted: Updated:

LAVINA - Hunters have a few weeks left to pursue big game in Montana and if you are looking for a place to hunt.

Block Management technician Greg Neville spends his weekends driving the back roads in central Montana every fall.

“I’ve been doing this for over 20 years, almost 25 years now. The good points is that it gives somebody an opportunity to go to someplace that they don’t have,” Neville said.

Block Management is a cooperative program between Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and private landowners to help manage hunting activities and allow hunters access to both private and some isolated public lands in Montana.

“It’s a great program and a great opportunity for both the hunter and the landowner," said FWP’s Jason Kool. “The landowner gets to have the hunters managed on their property we will compensate the landowner up to a maximum of $13 per day per hunter. At the same time, the hunter gets that access and that’s crucial in a state where access is such a hot topic.”

Montana has more than 800 Block Management areas granting access to more than 7 million acres, and to help manage this vast program on the ground, FWP hires seasonal technicians like Neville.

“It’s just another aspect of the program that gets often overlooked it’s not just about the payment, it’s not just about the access,” Kool said. “but it’s the hunter management so that’s just a service that we provide, and it works out really well is the opportunity for both landowners and hunters.”

One reward for these technicians are the relationships they make with the landowners and hunters in the field, "I like the people; the landowners are much more than nice they’re really spectacular,” Neville said.
