Annual Missoula Thanksgiving tradition continues

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Thanksgiving is a time of family, friends and fellowship.

But a large population in Missoula is unable to afford the fixings for a typical turkey-day feast and that's where the Goodfellows come in -- they feels no one should go hungry.

The goal of the Goodfellows is simple-- help those in need and for over 30 years the group has provided a Thanksgiving feast to those who otherwise would go without.

The Goodfellows Thanksgiving has been hosted at Fuddruckers on North Reserve for the past six years and while that collaboration had planned on feeding about 450 people on Thursday, by the end of the day they'd provided a Thanksgiving meal to a whole lot more.

"So we're at like 500, 500 plus right now. That's why we're a half hour early in closing," said Fuddruckers' General Manager Corey Wake. "So next year, we're going to definitely order some more product and make sure we can get everybody fed and everybody that comes in can get food for sure."

Wake aims to supply enough food to feed at least 600 people next year in order to keep up with this growing need. He added he doesn't mind working through the holiday -- so long as what he's doing ensures someone else's Thanksgiving shines a little brighter.

"I really enjoy helping out the community and all the less fortunate people that we have in Missoula, so it's just a great feeling," Wake said.

It wasn't just the restaurant and Goodfellows working through the dinnertime rush. Boy Scouts from around Missoula were also eager to do their part in keeping the tradition alive as well.

"We have never had a bad Boy Scout troop here," Wake told MTN News. "They're just so super awesome. We're glad to have them."

Those who stopped by on Thanksgiving left with smiling faces, full bellies and a little more to be thankful for.  The group is already planning their dinner next year.
