Missoula event raises awareness of unique sport

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Missoula organizations are teaming up to bring sled hockey to Missoula.

Sled hockey is a sit-down version of hockey that allows individuals with disabilities to play the sport.

Each sled costs about $800 to $1,000, so groups are working to raise awareness of the sport in order to raise money. A clinic was held at Glacier Ice Rick over the weekend so that people of all ages and skill levels could test out the sport.

In addition to raising awareness for this cause, some people were there in part to celebrate Paul Sharkey who had a heart attack on the ice during last year's event. His life was saved by his friends and teammates who did CPR.  An AED was also used to bring him back.

Sharkey referred to his friends as his heroes during this year’s event. Organizers told MTN News that the event is a great way to get more people involved in the hockey world.
