Fraud Watch: Charity Scams

Posted: Updated:

HELENA - The holiday season is a time of tender hearts, when we think about those less fortunate than us who may need our help. This time of year scammers are on the prowl, looking to take your money in the name of charity.

Holiday charity scammers make their pitch usually by phone, it's for a urgent need for a payment to be made right away -- either by prepaid debit card or credit card right over the phone. But, before you give anyone, any money, make sure to ask some key questions.

“Who are they representing, are they a representative of the particular charity, are they calling as a third party, are they a telemarketer who will receive a portion of that donation?" Marcus Meyer with the Montana Office of Consumer Protection. "Ask to receive information directly related to the charity in the mail. To always make payments with a check, because that way, if there is something that comes back, you can dispute that or cancel that check.”
