California wildfire forces cancellation on Griz basketball game

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES - The wildfires raging in Southern California has forced Wednesday night's basketball game between the University of Montana and UCLA to be called off.

A news release issued Wednesday afternoon states, "the health and safety of student-athletes, staff and fans is our top priority. Due to concerns stemming from area wildfires, tonight's men's basketball game versus Montana has been canceled. All other team workouts and practices scheduled for today also have been canceled."

UCLA, a few miles south of the fire, said it believed its campus was safe but canceled afternoon and evening classes, in addition to canceling the basketball game, according to CNN.

CNN is also reporting that police shut down nine miles of I-405 -- one of the nation's busiest freeways -- after flames swept down the foothills toward the highway near Sepulveda Pass and the Getty Center arts complex as stunned motorists drove by shortly before 6 a.m.

About 150,000 people in Los Angeles were under evacuation orders Tuesday. The number Wednesday, after the orders given because of the fire near I-405, wasn't immediately clear, according to CNN.
