New ice rink ready to go in Florence

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE - There’s some good news for ice skating fans in the Bitterroot thanks to the Florence Rural Fire District.

A new rink has gone up over the tennis courts at Florence Park.

Volunteers gathered Friday to line the space with a tarp and assembled other pieces of the kit, and plan to resurface it a couple times a week with fresh ice.

Organizers say it had been sitting there waiting to be flooded for about a month before temperatures were cold enough for a good freeze.

"We started a Facebook page and we got tons of comments and tons of likes, and I was surprised,” organizer Chris Kovatch said.

“I mean there's a lot of people that play hockey and skate down in the Bitterroot and travel into Missoula two or three times a week to go play, or just to go to open skate so yeah people are really excited,” he added.

The rink is open from daybreak to about 10:30 or 11 at night and is open to everyone.
