American Airlines adding new non-stop service to Missoula

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Western Montana will have direct service to two of the nation’s busiest hub airports next year, as American Airlines starts non-stop flights to Dallas and Chicago next summer.

With the mounted longhorns, and the Texas-shaped cookies, there wasn’t much suspense with Monday’s announcement of American Airlines offering direct flights to the Lone Star State, and Chicago next summer.

“I think this is a very exciting time for us. It will mean easy access to the rest of the world," said Missoula International Airport Director Cris Jensen. "It’s going to be a hit that gives you lots of interconnectivity to international flights as well as domestic flights. So I think in terms of air service this is a big step forward for the community.”

The flights on American’s Envoy E-175 jets start on June 7 with a direct flight each day, departing Dallas/Fort Worth at 9:30 a.m. and returning from Missoula at 1:25 p.m. The Chicago flights will leave the Windy City at 10:05 a.m. daily with a return flight departing Missoula at 12:30 p.m.

From a tourism standpoint, the flights fill a growing demand for flights from Western Montana to Texas over the past couple of years.

“They didn’t show at all. Then all of a sudden they started coming into the Top 5. And anymore they’re almost constantly within the first or second spot in our statistics," said Destination Missoula Executive Director Barbara Neilan. "So, we know its a great market and we know there are a lot of Montanans that want to go to Texas, and a lot of Texans that want to come to Montana. So it’s a perfect fit for us.”

Now the team says American Airlines’ announcement won’t be the last one. They’re continuing to work on other steps to improve air service into the Garden City.

Missoula is guaranteeing ticket sales, but is confident the flights will be full.

“We have the ability to offer an airline like American significant funds to come into our community," said Missoula Economic Partnership President and CEO James Grunke. "And we think this is going to be an on-going annual announcement that we’re going to be be bringing new service into this community."

When the American flights begin, it will be the sixth airline brand to fly out of Missoula International.

Airport officials announced Monday morning that American Airlines is adding new daily non-stop service to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and seasonal daily non-stop service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

The service will begin on June 7, 2018, but customers can book their flights now at www.aa.com.

"We are thrilled to welcome American Airlines to Missoula and Western Montana today,” said airport director Cris Jensen. “These flights would not be possible without community support."

"They provide an excellent opportunity for travelers to access Dallas and Chicago with easy connections to international destinations and a new opportunity
for the rest of the country and world to witness the beauty of Montana," Jensen added.

"Offering more routes in and out of Montana connects our state with exciting opportunities. It opens up Big Sky Country for more visitors and businesses, creating new jobs and economic opportunities," U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) said Monday.

“Tourism is one of the Treasure State’s greatest economic drivers and now travelers from Dallas and Chicago will be just one stop away from everything Montana has to offer,” added U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT). “More flights in and out of Missoula also means more choices for Montana families and more business and job opportunities in our state.”
