Donors step up to help Missoula Toys for Tots drive

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - The holidays are both joyous and sometimes stressful, as financial demands this month can zap the fun out of Christmas.

But on Wednesday, it was all smiles at the Marine Corps Reserve "Toys for Tots" distribution at the Salvation Army in Missoula -- and this year, the generosity was epic.

Donors gave more than 7,000 items for hundreds of Missoula County families to put under the tree. That means more than 1,000 children will have books and dolls, games and toys of all kinds to open Christmas morning.

Plus, families got a gift certificate to the Orange Street Food farm for their holiday meal.

The folks from Exit Realty helped Santa out by wrapping all the presents the parents picked out Wednesday.  It takes months to organize the annual event, and it's a perfect example of a community stepping up to share.

One mom with two little ones at home is thankful this program exists.

"We used to live in New Mexico and we'd heard about Toys for Tots," Maresa Maciel said. "But to see it here in Montana, it's really nice for people to come out and help children, to help families to have a toy at Christmas. Sometimes it's hard to budget because things are tight, but this is really good for all the people in Missoula."

Toys for Tots continues it's toy distribution from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday for families who have already signed up. Even with hundreds of families helped this holiday, there are still almost two dozen on the waiting list.
