Bitter cold and snow gripping northern U.S.

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK CITY - Much of the country remains in a deep freeze as millions of Americans endure some of the coldest temperatures in years. A a wind chill of -10 is expected in Minneapolis on Thursday and temperatures as low as -5 could be seen in Boston.

The bitter cold is expected to last through New Year's day.

There's cold -- and then there's northern Minnesota cold. In the small town of Cotton, temperatures dropped to 41 below zero on Wednesday.

"I was hoping my vehicle wouldn't start so I could stay home, but it started," said Cotton Postmaster Brenda Stehpens.

The plows are out and the layers are on in dozens of states including in Erie, Pennsylvania where the big dig continues after more than 60" of snow fell this week. When a state of emergency is this severe, strangers become friends.

"We just saw a car stuck in the snow bank and they looked like they needed some help, so we thought, why not!" said Keanna Drakes.

Whether you're digging out -- or just having fun -- doctors caution to look out for warning signs  about your health.

"Make sure that you're being aware that if you're seeing any numbness, redness, swelling, that you need to be warming up," said Dr. Daren Beam an Emergency Medicine Physician in Indianapolis.

Warm up and settle in --  when the ball drops in Times Square on New Year's Eve the mercury may drop to single digits.

Meteorologists say the air from this winter blast comes directly from the arctic.
