MISSOULA - The ongoing winter storm has prompted an avalanche warning to go into effect in the west-central Montana backcountry.

The current avalanche danger is high according to the West Central Montana Avalanche Center and very dangerous avalanche conditions are present.

Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended today.  Human triggered avalanches are very likely, and natural avalanches are likely.

The Center's Travis Craft says the avalanche warning is in effect until 6 a.m. on Saturday.

The forecast area received 5" to 8" of new snow in the last 24 hours, according to Craft, adding a significant new load to an already poor snowpack structure.
