Missoulians get outdoors to ring out 2017

MISSOULA - With the warm sunshine we had Sunday, many Missoulians decided to spend the last day of the year outside.

Reporter Donal Lakatua met with some locals enjoying some winter recreation.

It was a tight fit up Pattee Canyon on the last day of the year as dozens of snowshoers, hikers and cross-country skiers packed the lots.

Most skiers drive to a ski resort in the mountains, but in Missoula, recreationists only had to drive minutes from their house to enjoy the snow in the Pattee Canyon trail network.

“I think cross country skiing is not a sport you can take too seriously, like, just a fun thing to do and get outside," said Jeff Peabody.

Cross-country skiing relies completely on the locomotion of the skier themselves, rather than steep slopes or mechanics, like chairlifts.

But why should you cross-country ski?

“Guys… you'll get all the ladies. No it's just a, it's a great low impact exercise to get outside and if you're afraid of downhill skiing and like its a beautiful way to just get out and get some cardio and spend some time outside and breathe some fresh air and...there's no reason not to," said Matt Shyrock.
