COLUMBIA FALLS - A woman died in a Thursday afternoon accident between Columbia Falls and Whitefish.

Authorities tell MTN News that the fatal wreck on Montana Highway 40 led to a second crash in the same spot. Montana Highway Patrol Trooper John Underwood says the first crash involved a dump truck and a passenger car.

The dump truck was headed west approaching the intersection with Dillon Road when the driver of the car heading east lost control of her car and crossed the center line. The driver of the dump truck was unable to avoid the car, hitting the back of it.

The female driver of the car died on scene.

Immediately after the first crash, two vehicles collided while trying to avoid the wreckage. Occupants in both vehicles were transported to the hospital with what are said to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Trooper Underwood says road conditions and speed are suspected factors in the fatal crash, but the incident remains under investigation.
