Flu outbreak closes Kellogg, Idaho schools

Posted: Updated:

KELLOGG - The flu is taking its toll on a small Idaho school district.

All schools and buildings in the Kellogg School District are closed and all activities have been suspended until Jan. 15, according to the school district's website.

School officials say the shutdown is "to allow staff and students to stay home, get plenty of rest and seek any necessary medical services." While classes are canceled, the facilities will undergo a "deep cleaning".

All schools will re-open on Martin Luther King Day at their regular times.

"We will continue to monitor our flu outbreak and take steps to minimize the outbreak's impact...wherever possible," the school district reports.

According to reports, as of Jan. 10, the district saw 300 students called out sick, an absentee rate that reached 28%. In one school building, 15 staff members were also out sick.
