Montana HS teacher accused of sexual misconduct placed on leave

Posted: Updated:

SHEPHERD - A Shepherd High School teacher, who resigned from a school in Washington state in 2016 amid allegations of sexual misconduct with at least one student, was recently placed on administrative leave.

Thomas “Chris” Mattingly, a physical education teacher at Shepherd High, was hired at the school in August for the 2017-2018 school year.

Mattingly was placed on administrative leave Jan. 12, according to documents provided by Shepherd Superintendent Scott Carter on Wednesday. The notice of paid leave does not indicate why Mattingly was removed from Shepherd High School and Carter did not elaborate.

Carter did say Wednesday that the district was not aware that Mattingly was accused of sexual misconduct at a school district in Washington State when he was offered a contract in August.

Jayme Taylor, the spokeswoman for Lake Stevens High School in Washington State, confirmed Mattingly was previously employed with that district.

Taylor said her district never received a reference call from Shepherd School District leaders. “We could have filled them in on all of this,” said Taylor in a phone interview.

A report from The Herald, based in Everett, WA, states that Mattingly was being investigated by Lake Stevens police in 2016 for alleged sexual misconduct involving a former student.

Mattingly allegedly viewed pornography on his school computer, according to a report from The Herald. The newspaper reported in 2016 that Mattingly’s teaching license was under review by the Washington superintendent’s office.

It’s unclear if that review has concluded.

Mattingly was advised in a letter from Carter not to retaliate against anyone and was told to have his personal belongings removed from the building by Jan. 19. Carter said in the letter he would recommend a non-renewal of Mattingly’s contract to the school board.

Mattingly was still listed on the Shepherd School District staff directory as of Wednesday afternoon.
