Deputy announces candidacy for Missoula Co. Sheriff

MISSOULA - A Missoula County Sheriff's deputy announced his candidacy for Missoula County Sheriff on Friday.

Travis Wafstet said he is running as an Independent candidate. He'll be running against current Sheriff T.J. McDermott.

Wafstet is a lifelong resident of Missoula, joining the Missoula County Sheriff's Office more than 15 years ago as a member of the Sheriff's Cadet/Explorer program.

Currently Wafstet is assigned to the Patrol division and was recently selected as a Detective Specialist. He also holds the position of Assistant Fire Chief for East Missoula Rural Fire Department.

The filing deadline for candidates is March 12. The general election is November 6.
