MT DNRC advises flood insurance during freeze-thaw season

Posted: Jan 30, 2018 6:09 PM Updated:

HELENA - The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation is not too concerned about possible flooding following last week's warm-up.

According to officials, ice jams may occur as there is always a potential during a freeze-thaw, but so far they have not seen any signs. But folks may see ponding of water in low-lying areas or fields though.

"Now is an important time to look into flood insurance," Michelle McNamee, a floodplain specialist, said. "If anyone in Lewis and Clark County is interested, they are eligible regardless of where they live."

McNamee added that more ice jams occur in January, February, and March and that ice jams and runoff can be covered by flood insurance.
