HELENA - One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting with a Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s deputy late Thursday night.
Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton says it started as a call to a home on Casper Drive near East Helena.
A caller reported a male at that residence was bleeding from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The caller also reported the injured man was armed with a handgun.
Deputies arrived and attempted to speak with the injured man, but Sheriff Dutton says the deputy had to fire his weapon to protect himself and other individuals at the scene.
The man died at the scene while none of the deputies or bystanders involved were injured. Sheriff Dutton says the deputy is on administrative leave as is standard procedure.
The sheriff has requested assistance from the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation.
