University of Montana hosting 101st Foresters Ball

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - The  Schreiber Gymnasium has been turned over to the UM Forestry Club for the annual Foresters Ball with organizers saying that 101 years of tradition are continuing and this year's event will be even better than the last.

“It’s a little difficult to follow up such an awesome achievement. 100 years of foresters ball. It's obviously an important milestone but i think the 101st is even almost more important, you know, we've made it to the 100th and now we're going past and were heading towards 200,” said Chief Push Eamon Burke.

“It just amazing what a bunch of forestry students can accomplish in five days while going to class while doing assignments. Literally turning a school gym into a logging town," Burke added.

The group had just one week to build the 19th century themed town. There is a chapel where you can pick up a marriage license valid for 24 hours, a barber that will cut your hair, a museum, a jail, a saloon and more.

This year they hope to attract more students and used social media, talked to residents life, and dropped tickets out of a helicopter onto the Oval to boost attendance at the event.

UM sophomore Sam Malloy joined the Forestry Club a few weeks ago after his roommate suggested he learn more about the group.

“I’ve never been to foresters ball before. I didn't really know too much about it and I didn't know when it was and everything. I think that this year we've definitely done a really good job of reaching out. I think we've had a fair amount of good advertising and everything,” said Malloy.

UM alumni come from all over to volunteer or attend the event with friends and family -- including Eric Hoberg.

. “It'll be the best night of your year by far. I've never had anyone regret it. Everybody's excited when they get here it's well worth --  you get a great a great concert, great atmosphere, dancing, and to just come in here and look around is worth your ticket price," Hoberg told MTN News.

You are required to arrive sober but for all those of age there will be a beer garden open from 7:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased on the GrizTix website.
