Missoula's Uptown Diner closing its doors

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Many Missoulians recognize the teal and pink retro signage of the Uptown Diner.

The classic restaurant has served many Montanans since 1991 but announced Friday that they would be closing their doors forever. ?Reporter Donal Lakatua talked with long-time employees and loyal customers to get their reaction to the news.

The Uptown Diner has long been a staple in Missoula’s downtown but on Friday, managers announced that it would be closing its doors forever.

"Friday they put on the radio that we were gonna close, on the 18th of February. It just exploded. We can even keep ice cream -- enough ice cream. We've been to get ice cream three times in the last two days," said Syleena Simkins who works as the front manager. "I think that kids love this place, our milkshakes are the bomb."

"I've been coming here since I was a baby. So I'm really gonna miss this place and I love it so much," said one customer, Rowan.

"I've been coming here since I was a baby as well. 'm going to miss it Because I love the milkshakes, as I'm drinking one right now. My favorite thing is probably the huge picture of Marilyn Monroe," added fellow patron Oschar.

The announcement prompted employees to create and sell collectible t-shirts. Simkins says the profits will go to the employees who now have to find new job prospects.

"We should all give as much money as we can to keep this place in business," Rowan said.

"I think a lot of friendly people come here and I wish that I could stay in business," Oschar added.

"We've had the best customers for the last you know at least as long as I've been here -- but for the last 27 years. "I just wanna say thank you to the community, thank you to Missoula, our customers, our awesome employees. And if there are any good job offers come in and offer us a job," Simkins said.

Some might miss the pastel pinks and teals, Some the burgers and shakes, but the biggest loss will be the memories.

Just what will happen to the building after Feb. 18 isn't known at this time.
