HELENA - The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office said a Great Falls man died in an apparent climbing accident west of Augusta on Sunday.
Dispatchers received the call just after 1 p.m. Five people were ice climbing at Cataract Falls when one of them slipped and fell with Sheriff Leo Dutton saying in a statement the man fell about 90 feet.
Cataract Falls is about 20 miles west of Augusta off Elk Creek Road. The area is remote and difficult to access with deep snow and limited cell coverage.
Dutton said first responders arrived at the victim’s location around 3 p.m. Officials called for Mercy Flight out Great Falls, but weather conditions meant the closest the helicopter could reach was Augusta. A local rancher assisted with equipment to help recover the victim.
The Sheriff’s Office said the man, whose name has not been released, was an avid climber and familiar with the area. His name has not been released.
