Controversial Missoula development proposal approved

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - The Missoula City Council has approved a controversial 31-unit townhouse development in the Orchard Homes neighborhood.

There was quite a bit of public comment during Monday night's council meeting and nearly 90 minutes was spent on just the Grove Street Townhome vote alone.

Many residents living near the development spoke out against the annexation and zoning request with 59 residents within three blocks of the proposed neighborhood signing a petition against it. They say the development is too dense for the surrounding area, especially with added traffic.

But the Missoula City Council approved the proposal on a 9-to-1 vote. saying the safety issues, traffic and other residential concerns did not outweigh the need for affordable housing in Missoula. Two city councilors were absent for the vote.

The lone councilor to vote no was Jesse Ramos from Ward 4.
