Historic Glacier NP properties may soon come up for lease

Posted: Updated:

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK - Some 24 historic buildings and structures at Glacier National Park may be soon available for lease.

Park officials have released a plan to the public for a 30-day review and comment period.

The "Lake McDonald Properties Management Plan" addresses seven park-owned properties near Lake McDonald.  The properties include 24 historic buildings and structures, most of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The assessment evaluates the proposal for the future preservation, management and administration of the properties.

There are two alternatives in the assessment. The first is a no action alternative and the second gives a range of options for each property from historic leasing, park or concessioner use, stabilization or removal of the buildings.

Glacier National Park spokeswoman Lauren Alley says these structures are very valuable to the park and this provides an opportunity to make use of them.

“These have been on the national register of historic places for quite some time and they tell and important part of the parks heritage and history and this is a potential solution to help preserve and restore some of these structures," Alley said.

Public comment for runs until March 1. The proposal is available through the park’s planning website. Comments can be made directly through this website, or written to:  Superintendent, Glacier National Park, Attn:  Lake McDonald Properties Management Plan EA, PO Box 128 West Glacier, Montana 59936.
