Kalispell man stabs himself in neck during traffic stop

Posted: Updated:

KALISPELL - A Kalispell man pulled over for routine traffic stop is now in the hospital after he stabbed himself in the neck.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry reported around 9 a.m. Thursday that a deputy initiated a traffic stop east of Evergreen on U.S. Highway 2.

The deputy ran the driver's name and found that he was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant. When he returned to the vehicle the male had a large knife to his throat.

At that time the deputy called for backup to block the vehicle and contain the situation.

Negotiations began and continued until just after 11:30 a.m. when the man in the vehicle stabbed himself in the neck.

The man was taken from the car and given medical attention immediately as Evergreen Fire and Rescue were on scene.

The 24-year-old man was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center and does not have life-threatening injuries.

Curry says the male is being held on a mental health hold.
