One Class at a Time: Paxson Elementary

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Paxson Elementary 5th grade science teacher Kim Olson puts an emphasis on her students learning outside the classroom.

Her students study various components of the ecosystem, including bird ecology. Data such as bird counts and species identification are just a part of what her students focus on.

Olson says having a set of binoculars in the classroom would enhance the learning process.

Thanks to Republic Services and KPAX-TV, Olson is the winner of this week’s One Class At A Time grant. KPAX General Manager Bob Hermes presented her a $250 check which will be used to purchase binoculars.

“What I would like to do with these binoculars, and with the kids is do bird counts all year round, throughout the school year, so they can see the change in the bird communities, so they get an idea of when certain species start to migrate, when they return,” Olson said.
