WHITEFISH - Multiple search and rescue teams are still searching for a skier who went missing near Big Mountain over the weekend.
Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry says they received a call Saturday at around 2:30, reporting the skier did not return home from a backcountry excursion. The man was skiing alone and out of boundaries on a backcountry trail.
Initially, North Valley Search and Rescue were active until 3:00 a.m. Flathead Search and Rescue joined in Sunday morning, but Sheriff Curry says weather conditions made it challenging.
"As you can imagine the weather conditions have made the search pretty challenging for us. We were able to get the Two Bear Air Bear rescue helicopter up for a few hours today, but the conditions are pretty extreme out there between the lack of visibility, blowing snow, high wind," Sheriff Curry said.
He told MTN News that they have identified the man but are not releasing his name yet. We have been told he is an experienced backcountry skier. We'll have more information as it becomes available.
