MISSOULA - Two Hellgate High School students have been detained by Missoula Police after a community member overheard the students talking about a gun outside the high school Wednesday.
Principal Judson Miller reported that through their investigation, they learned one student was in possession of a pellet gun that looked like a small pistol at the front doors of Hellgate on Gerald Street.
"A community member out in front of the school had indicated she heard two students talking about a gun of some sort and immediately notified our SRO. He immediately responded and we know who the students were and brought them in the office."
Miller said his administration team and school resource officer immediately identified the students involved and located them. She added there does not appear to be an intention to use the gun within the school or to threaten or intimidate staff and students within the school.
Both students were quickly brought into the office and have been detained by Missoula Police after the school investigation. Miller said the students will receive both out-of-school and legal consequences.
Miller is also commending the students and community for upholding the culture and behaviors that they expect of the Hellgate community.
"We tell students and community if you see something let one of us know, say something so we had a lot of these reports. We always take them seriously, we always follow up on them and this was an indication in what I believe was our really good safety systems at work."

A message from HELLGATE HIGH SCHOOL
Good afternoon Hellgate Families,
In light of the past week of anxiety and tension related to school safety, I want to commend our students for upholding the culture we have created as members of the Hellgate community and the behaviors we expect of all Hellgate students. We teach and reinforce all students to be uphold the expectations of being a Hellgate Knight. This afternoon, our admin team worked with our school resource officer to manage a situation involving two students who reportedly had a gun. The information came to our attention through a community member contacting our school resource officer at the front doors of our campus on Gerald Street.
In the course of our investigation, we learned that one student was in possession of a pellet gun (air/spring powered) that looked like a small pistol. Our team reacted immediately, identified the students involved, and located them. The students were out in front of the building on Gerald Street when this incident occurred. There does not appear to be an intention to use the gun within the school or to threaten or intimidate staff and students within the school. Both students were quickly brought into the office and have been detained by MPD after our school investigation. The students will receive both out-of-school and legal consequences.
If you would like to know more about this process or ask questions about school safety please contact my office directly.
