Lowell School locked down after boy seen nearby with BB gun

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Lowell Elementary School went into a brief lockdown Thursday afternoon after the school was informed that a boy appeared to be on the playground with a rifle.

Missoula Police Department spokesman Sgt. Travis Welsh told MTN News that a witness described the male walking into a residence in the 1100 block of Sherwood, just east of the school.

Authorities then made contact with the 12-year-old boy at the residence and learned that the rifle was a BB gun. During the response, Lowell was contacted by police and asked to go into a "lockdown" until such time the incident could be resolved.

The incident occurred after most students had been released because of early out. However, some students and staff were still in the building which is why the lockdown went into effect.

Despite being a BB gun, Missoula County Public Schools spokeswoman Hatton Littman said the school district took es the matter as seriously as any other incident involving a firearm
