Probe continues after students found with pellet gun near Missoula school

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - Two students were detained by Missoula Police on Wednesday after they were found to have pellet gun near Hellgate High School.

The two were at Hellgate High School on the Gerald Street side of the building when they were overheard talking about the gun. A woman then confronted the two who fled into the school and hiding the gun behind a dumpster.

The woman then reported the incident to the Hellgate school resource officer who detained the two and later brought them to the Missoula police station. They were released to their parents and an investigation is ongoing and will determine any legal action taken against the two.

“Based on the complaint by the citizen, we are investigating everything surrounding this incident, including where this pellet gun came from, how this young man came to be in possession of it and what his intentions were by having it on campus," Missoula Police spokesman Sergeant Travis Welsh said.

Sgt. Welsh also said that if charges are filed it will depend on those questions and does not anticipate the investigation taking a long amount of time.
