Montana reservations in need of hay after severe winter weather

HELENA - Severe winter weather has strained farmers and ranchers on the Northern Cheyenne and Fort Belknap reservations.

The Montana Hay Hotline is calling for donations for both reservations with Montana Disaster and Emergency Services officials at Fort Harrison saying they are in touch daily with agriculture producers in the area.

The Blackfeet Tribe conducted an assessment and told DES they have not run out of hay yet, but tribal leaders are concerned about how fast the supply is depleting.

DES administrator Delila Bruno said they have reached out to around 400 people nationally and expect to have a large number of people contribute.

"It's always great when neighbors help neighbors and when we see folks in Montana donate to their neighbors in need, we really appreciate that as well as the donations that come in nationally. It really means a lot," Bruno said.

Producers willing to donate hay and/or hauling services can contact emergency personnel at the following numbers:

Northern Cheyenne: Gene Small - (406)665-6290
Fort Belknap: John Young - (406)353-4874
